Aw, thank you! And fic is of course a lot more fun (and far, far better written!), but in most cases the meta underpins it. I can't have the fic without the meta underneath. :)

If you have any recs for meta about Eleven BEFORE the end of his first series, I would love to look at that too. I just can't get a handle on him as a character. He seems so far removed from Ten. i felt that Ten was a natural progression from Nine. i felt that Ten had a definite development arc and saw how naturally that led to his ending. But I can't see how Eleven came out of that.
Well the first post that sprang to mind was this one: Eleventh Doctor - generic or iconic? (Stay away from the comments - there might be spoilers there, I'm not sure.) Anyway, you're certainly not alone in feeling that way. To quote a few snippets of one of my own posts, which might help you:

I have said before that I don’t see much of Ten in Eleven – except for the effects of having been Ten. And I think we need to look on that as being deliberate – Eleven is a conscious, intentional attempt at change, a decision to transform made flesh, literally.

This works twofold:

1. In many ways Eleven isn’t a continuation so much as a reaction against Ten’s more problematic flaws. Or a self-correction, maybe – swinging the other way?

2. Stepping back further we can see how the Doctor, post-Time War, slowly re-gains a sense of self. The Doctor from Classic!Who was bright (sometimes too bright, I’m looking at you, Six) and eccentric. Nine was all in black (mourning), closed off (lonely), taciturn (guilty). Nine led to Ten - brighter, more in-your-face, but also more brittle, and with a very sharp dress code. Ten was the man of ‘No second chances’, someone who had a tendency to see the world in black and white - for or against him. Which brings us to Eleven. Eleven who is a true eccentric once more, and a man who – whilst mourning the loss of his race, and wishing things could have been different – no longer lets his loss (or his actions) define him.

(Or, to quote sahiya: 'In "The End of Time," when Ten dies, it is with one last big melodramatic, overwrought, overly emotional BANG. And then he wakes up as Eleven - AND IT'S FINE. Better than fine, really. Sure, the TARDIS is crashing, but it's not like that hasn't happened before, and then he meets this awesome little Scottish girl, and really, things are fine. And the Doctor goes, "Holy crap on a cracker, I was mad. Let's not do that again!"'

Although really, my icon says it all...

It's not very long, so there is that. And it was written post ep 3 of S5, if you want it chronologically. :)

but I can't see how your icon ties to that. I can't see how Eleven has rewritten Ten.
I can explain this better once you've seen the 2010 Christmas Special. But briefly then my theory goes that in the moment of regeneration a Timelord changes all in one go, rather than, like a human, undergoing therapy and so on.

I feel like Eleven has to have come out of Ten somewhere and I just can't find that opening in Ten.
I know the answer to this! (Funnily enough I've spent a LOT of time discussing this very topic - that's where the icon came from...) Anyway, I think the key to Eleven lies in Ten's death. Ten was (always) ready to make the big sacrifices - to give his life for the world. Being killed by the Master - or even better Rassilon - to save the universe was precisely the sort of ending he'd imagined. Except that's not what happened. He ended up dying for a single person - someone old and not 'remotely important' ('important' is one of Eleven's keywords btw). Plus remember that he then went back and visited all his companions... And that's where Eleven comes from. Ten was so focussed on himself and his own pain and loss that he couldn't see what he had. (I'm not blaming him for this btw. He was all broken after all, poor thing.) To quote solitary_summer:

The Face of Boe still gives Ten the key phrase that might have changed so much for him if only he'd been willing and able to read it differently, instead of insisting that only another Time Lord would make him less alone.

(You've read this meta on Ten's final moments? It's amazing.)

Anyway, I think Eleven embraces Ten's hard-earned lessons and truly *lives* again, rather than running away. (My meta 'Becoming Eleven' which is linked above - and has spoilers for finale! - talks about how Eleven evolves and should also prove helpful.)

I have only read the first few metas so far. I am still in Series Three ones :) The Master, oh man, I loved him so much!

I finished the regular series episodes last night. I loved loved loved the last two. Rory being plastic and River being BAMF and Amy and Amelia and OMG it was SO GOOD!!!!! The Pandorica!!!!
