elisi: Edwin and Charles (Spike - fighting for his soul by awmp)

Mini epiphany of the day.

Have been discussing 'what did Spike ask for - the chip out or his soul back?' in the AOQ 'Grave' thread, and the nay-sayers keep going on about the stupid dialogue and saying that there's no hint that Spike has asked for a soul (the fact that the thing was written to be as fuzzy as possible is lost on them). But... (from 'Villains'):

The Lurking demon says: "...and you have the audacity to crawl in here and demand restoration?"

The gypies re-souling spell is called 'The Ritual of Restoration.'

Now that is just... neat. :)

"sigh" The Spike haters are never, never going to believe that he wasn't tricked but this is a rather neat essay that lays out some excellent points for believing he knew exactly what he was asking for. And thank you ME for trying to be so tricky that to this day people don't believe his soul quest "morons".

Can I get a point of reference where it names this ritual, because that's perfect. (I'm keeping this in my memories)

YAY, I'm posting this for my memories and in my LJ. Thanks so much..

That is about the only clue. That word is only used elsewhere when talking about 'restoring' Angel's soul.

However, I fear changing the nay-sayers' minds at this late date is probably impossible.

:kicks stupid ME badly directed plot twists:

Let alone 'gallows humour.'

It's blindingly obvious in the make up of the story. He's told again and again he's deficient because he hasn't a soul, it's necessary for the resolution of the plot that he asks for it, in much the same way as you could see from some point in mid-season 6 that she would say 'I love you' one day.

Yeah, they respond on a literal level, not a literary one and can't cope with mixed motives.

I'm writing plays about interviews with fans and bashers for Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles and Spike. I already finished the Xander one and it's posted in my LJ, right now I'm writing the Spike one, I'm stuck at the point where bashers accuse Spike of leaving to get his chip out and can't grasp the "Plot Twist" of it... hopefully I'll post it soon, thankfully the Xander play didn't get any flaming, even though I was a bit disappointed, hope the Spike play goes well.. :)

So, what do the Spike...detractors say about Joss' subsequent assertions in no uncertain terms that Spike went to Africa on a soul quest, and lengths that he (Joss) took to keep everyone in the dark as to his real intentions (including JM and the director - - so dumb!)?

[identity profile] jgracio.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
IMO, it doesn't matter what Spike went to do. It can be read both ways, and it still works because by the time Spike gets back to Sunnydale he already has a soul and as such isn't capable of knowing exactly what it is an unsouled vampire feels, because the soul messes with everything.

It only matters if you're an unsouled Spike redemptionist, and that is something that wasn't going to happen in BtVS, the writers didn't want it to happen (rightly IMO).

It doesn't matter because it works anyway. It works if he went to get his soul of his own accord and it works if he was tricked into his soul.

It works in a "Ha, ha, another one of Spike's plans blows up in his face. Dumb Spike." and it works in a "He got the soul for her, so he could be complete. *swoon*"

Trying to convince people on what actually happened or was intended at the time is actually trying to change people's opinion on Spike. Not happening.

You might see all the deep implications towards Angel, and how Angel spending a hundred years moping makes him a worse person while someone else might say that for someone who spent all that time murdering people Spike sure didn't mope enough. It's a matter of what you think about Spike. That's it.

"If his response to the AR really truly was 'I'm going to get this chip out of my head so I can destroy Buffy's life', then Spike is as awful as Angelus, if not worse. And it would be at odds with his growth over the last 3 years on the show, and at odds with his love for Buffy and his overriding need for her to love him."

Exactly. And then there's what he says when he gets back to his crypt: "What have I done? Why didn't I do it?" He had failed at being a man and at being a monster (well... relatively for the second one). Getting the chip out would neither help to prevent the AR from happening again nor change the fact that when Buffy kicked him across the room, he didn't get back up and attack her again. He wouldn't be closer to humanity or to the Spike of season 2 who showed up in Sunnydale ready to kill his third slayer. In the context of that line, it doesn't make sense for removing the chip to be his plan.

Ah, very interesting! Nice little tidbit that. As for the naysayers yes, not likely to listen to what all the writers are telling them (as Jane did yet again last weekend. She thought it was one of ME's biggest goofs).

Yes, she brought it up on her own too, as the question was about having things misunderstood or interpreted differently than expected. It was clearly an issue she was frustrated by.

I've been skimming a lot too as I'm trying to catch up, but I just finished!
