Update from The House of Plague, Day 71
~
Via Kerk, some timely comedy (well, it's from 2016, so blissfully free of current politics):
Only two more things outside the cut. This article gets to the heart of it:
Cummings’ contempt for lockdown rules makes the public feel like fools
The Catholic church in Ireland lost power by flouting the morals it prescribed. The Tory government risks a similar fate
And this is so ridiculously brilliant that it feels like it must be made up, but no. This is real:
In 19th century English, the expression ‘Come, come, that’s Barnard Castle!’ was used as a response to someone who had offered a flawed excuse for their actions.

There’s currently an annoying helicopter circling around while I’m trying to work. I assume it’s the police checking that, as per the latest government guidance, everyone’s doing whatever the fuck they like.

TOP TIP: DON'T test your eyesight by driving to Barnard Castle, instead test it by reading the article your wife wrote for the Spectator which directly contradicts your story

Cummings wanted to self-isolate somewhere nice with lots of private woodland instead of being holed up for two weeks in his London home. When they felt better he took his wife on a birthday trip to Barnard Castle. This is the logical explanation of what happened

‘It’s time to move on’ says government that’s worked harder to safeguard one man’s job in three days than it has to protect frontline workers and care home residents in three months.

I thought I was irked by today's circus. You should see my mild-mannered father-in-law's reaction 😳#dominiccummings pic.twitter.com/NN50fzTuzV

My MP has just responded. (He initially retweeted something in Cummings defence)

I haven't commented publicly on the situation with Dominic Cummings as I have waited to hear the full details. I welcome the statement to clarify matters, but there remains aspects of the explanation which I have trouble with. As a result I have resigned as a government Minister. pic.twitter.com/6yXLyMzItJ

Don't forget, there are other, more important stories:
The government has quietly admitted that it's double counting its tests. Results have never hit more than 80k in a day. https://t.co/gpAa6Z4R32 pic.twitter.com/LEyEbSQmBa

The biggest scandal right now should be that 1 in every 1,000 Britons has died because of this pandemic. We have the highest death toll in Europe because of a delayed lockdown, and that is on Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings and the whole Conservative Government.
